I am trying to find out more information about Thomas (born 1812?) and Jacobina Hutchison (born 1812). Thomas and Jacobina were married in 1836 and appear on the 1841 census living in Silvermills, Edinburgh with their son William and daughter Jane. William is my Great Great Grandfather. My Great Grandmother was Susan Farmer Hutchison Ritchie Mitchell who married Thomas Flockhart from Loanhead. Susan came from Gilmerton.

Thomas and Jacobina appear to have left Scotland between the 1851 census and the birth of their son James in 1853 in New York. The census of 1871 shows Jacobina back in Scotland in Gilmerton and she states she is a Pensioner of America. Her death certificate in 1877 states that she is a widow of Thomas Mitchell a Corporal in the New York Volunteers. So it seems Thomas joined the Civil War in America.

I am hoping someone might be researching Mitchells from Gilmerton and know a bit more about Thomas and Jacobina. I can trace Jacobina's birth but cannot trace Thomas as I don't have his death certificate to try to find out who is parents were.
